n this article we are going to discuss on How to Upgrade/Update latest Linux Kernel Version in RHEL/Cent OS 7. Kernel is nothing but a base of any operating system or we can say core part of a operating system.

It’s interact with your all Hardware devices like Motherboard, Hard-disks, System Memory, I/O devices like Keyboard, Mouse.and manage it.

As we know that BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) which is responsible for initialize all hardware and load the kernel in to system memory and Kernel is the first program starts at system startup by loading in to memory then starts the Operating System and then start all services.

Cent OS 7 comes with Kernel Version 3.10.0-229.el7.x86_64.

uname -msr You will get the kernel version as below.

Now we know that we are using kernel 4.4 at the moment.

In this step, we will upgrade the used kernel to the latest mainline kernel build version 4.11.2.

I will be using Ubuntu 16.04.2 Xenial Xerus with default kernel version 4.4 as basis upgrade it to the 4.11.2 kernel version. The Mainline Kernel Build is just a vanilla kernel from packaged as a deb package.

The Canonical Kernel Team builds and customizes the kernel sources for Ubuntu and builds it as package for easy installation with the apt package manager.
